Planning for a new aquarium is an exciting time! Deciding on plants, aquarium size and type of filtration system are all big steps. (Okay, we admit that last one might not be exciting to everyone.) But, we’ve found that more than anything, new aquarists can’t wait to pick out their new fish. We’ve designed, built and maintained countless New Jersey aquarium installations in the past 20 years and during that time we’ve learned a lot about which fish are the best picks for both beginner and expert aquarists. Here are some of our favorites based on skill level:
The Best Beginner Fish
If you’re selecting fish for your first aquarium, consider the Three S’s.
-
Sturdy
Choose a fish that is able to tolerate varying water conditions and isn’t too picky when it comes to food.
-
Size
Choosing fish that won’t grow to be too much larger than the other fish in your tank will make it easier to keep a harmonious environment.
-
Schooling
Schooling fish are a good choice as they’re less likely to display signs of aggression.
Rainbowfish, Rasboras, Danios, Guppies, Tetras and Cherry Barbs are all great beginner fish. Check out our Live Stock to see if we have what you’re looking for.
Leave it to the Experts
Many long-time aquarists who are skilled at tank maintenance still prefer low-maintenance fish. Besides, the health benefits of an aquarium are the same whether you have a Guppy or an Axolotl. But, for those of you looking for a challenge, here are a few fish that advanced hobbyists love.
Arowana
These huge fish (up to 2 ½ feet long!) come from the Amazon and require a large tank and frequent feedings consisting of crabs, bugs and shrimp.
Axolotl
This favorite among the advanced crowd is actually an amphibian. These carnivorous creatures hail from Mexico and require frequent water changes and carefully maintained water conditions.
Orange Spotted Filefish
These beautiful and bright fish (seen in the photo above) wouldn’t be so hard to care for if it wasn’t for their persnickety nature. Filefish will only eat small polyp stony coral (SPS), which is even harder to keep alive than most fish!
