As the New Jersey fish tank installation experts at Armco Aquatics, we’ve seen our fair share of aquarium mistakes. Here are three of the most common first-time aquarist mistakes (and how to fix them!)
Mistake #1: Overfeeding Your New Friends
We get it. You want to make sure your new fish are full and happy. Plus, it’s so fun to see them swim over to the front of the aquarium. “But they looked hungry,” is a common refrain we hear from our new clients. However, overfeeding can put your fish in a dangerous situation. The uneaten food that settles to the bottom of your aquarium will begin to rot and create ammonia, which is toxic to fish.
The Fix: Set up a feeding schedule and stick to it. A good rule of thumb is to only feed your fish an amount of food that they can finish within 5 minutes.
Mistake #2: Your New Fish Aren’t Friends
When picking out new fish for your aquarium, several factors must be considered. Some of the basic factors are whether they thrive in freshwater, saltwater, cold water or warm water. But there are many other considerations like level of aggression, type of feeder and size. You wouldn’t want a tank full of aggressive bottom feeders or your tank won’t be full for long!
The Fix: Thoroughly research each species of fish you’re considering for your community or enlist the help of a professional.
Mistake #3: A Case of Filter Failure
Between all of the different mechanical and chemical filtration options, there are so many choices to make! Unfortunately, we often see first-time aquarists underestimating their aquarium’s filtration needs. When an aquarium doesn’t have adequate filtration, bacteria buildup can decrease the oxygen levels and put your fish in immediate danger.
The Fix: Make sure you select a filtration system with the capacity to handle your aquarium’s particular size. When it comes to a mechanical filtration system, err on the side of caution and get a powerful filter. For chemical filtration, consult an expert prior to use.
