Raising fish can be rewarding, but it’s not as easy as many people think it is. Following these aquarium maintenance tips can create a healthy environment where your fish can thrive!
Find out What Your Fish Need
Different species of fish have different requirements, in terms of water temperature, pH, and other conditions. Research your particular species of fish, understand what they need, purchase appropriate supplies, and create a maintenance plan.
Test and Treat the Water
Before you put tap water into your aquarium, test it to check the levels of chlorine, chloramine, phosphates, and other parameters. Depending on your findings and the needs of your fish, you might have to take additional measures to make the water safe for them.
Change the Water on a Regular Basis
When waste and other debris are allowed to build up in an aquarium, the health of the fish can suffer. You should routinely replace a portion of the water to keep the tank clean and maintain safe conditions for your fish. You can use a siphon to remove water from the aquarium.
Clean the Filter
Your aquarium’s filter will get filled with debris and will have to be cleaned regularly so it can continue to do its job. Empty the filter and replace the insert and media when necessary. Don’t scrub the filter or use soap or any type of chemical to clean it.
Clean the Tank
Algae and other contaminants can build up on the walls of the aquarium and create unhealthy conditions for your fish. From time to time, you’ll have to give the tank a thorough cleaning. When you clean the walls of the aquarium with filter floss, start at the bottom and work your way up.
