The world of DIY projects has exploded with websites like YouTube, making projects that were once inaccessible easily doable on your own. There’s no better example of this than building your own fish tank. These days, there are several walk-through websites and countless youtube instruction videos on how to create your own aquarium. At Armco Aquatics, we’ve been designing and building state-of-the-art fish tanks for decades, so we’ll give you some important tips to remember when building a large fish tank.
Water Weight
When you set out to build a large fish tank, it’s important to know what you’re getting yourself into…before it’s too late! If the thickness of your tank’s glass can’t sustain the water it’s meant to contain, you’ll be met with a dangerous explosion of water and glass. Not a fun cleanup job. It’s also worth noting the sturdiness of your floor and making sure, beyond the shadow of a doubt, that the aquarium’s base can support its weight. The last thing you want is to see your beautiful new fish tank crashing through the floor! Try an aquarium glass thickness calculator to find out how thick your glass needs to be.
Sourcing Your Glass
One of the most important parts of the job will be sourcing your glass. Although it’s quite possible to cut your own glass, you may want to look into local glass cutting businesses to significantly reduce the labor and danger of the tank-building task. If you can’t find any, try looking up a window repair contractor. Remember – for typical rectangular tanks, you’ll need 5 panels of glass, as the 4 sides will be adhered both to each other and to the base panel at the bottom.
